The Kiss 2003
Incipient just before the invasion of Iraq, this gladiatorial piece evolved throughout the first year of the war. A tightly choreographed performance, The Kiss involved two paramilitary personnel approaching one another along a ten metre expanse, controlled from behind by sinister gas-masked ‘wranglers’ with cords attached to hooks in their backs. The combatants came together in a reconciliatory kiss, only to be pulled apart again. It was as much about personal relationships as about war.
