The 9th Station 2004
14 – Via Crucis Australis was a commission by Sydney choral ensemble, The Song Company, of fourteen pieces of music from fourteen classical composers for the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, at Sydney Town Hall. Fourteen artists – video, installation, design and performance – interpreted each station. senVoodoo performed the 9th Station – Jesus Stumbles for the Third Time. It was a simple traversal of the space by a veiled woman in an ankle-length robe, and a military officer. The veiled woman had her lips stitched, and virtually dragged the officer across the floor with reins attached to hooks inserted the length of her back. An observation of power, control and the silencing of protest, this performance has strong political references, particularly to asylum seekers and torture.
