ART CON 2002

Created for the opening of the Sydney Biennale, ART CON was a comment on the obfuscatory and pretentious language common to much contemporary art. This work contrasted dry, quirky content with extreme, corporeal performance. Two ‘curators’ hang placards on hooks inserted into masked, bandaged and crutched mannequins. The placards, featuring words and phrases of artspeak, shift constantly, offering endless nonsensical interpretations. The performance ended with the mannequins removing the last placards and hooks, removing the masks, taking an egg from their mouths and passing it to the audience.
